Kick Veldman's series CASTING MIRRORS investigates human self-perception. Drawing inspiration from the earliest mirrors, which were crafted by polishing volcanic obsidian, Veldman sought out a similar raw material in his surroundings. He gathered discarded aluminum from streets and scrapyards, transforming it through a careful process of melting, casting, machining, and polishing. The resulting artworks pay tribute to the material’s inherent qualities and engage with it to explore the complexities of self-reflection. Through this process, Veldman creates a connection between object and observer, offering a fresh perspective on both the mirror itself and the act of looking inward.
