Maria Vera van Embden Andres ()

Maria Vera creates contemporary kinetic sculptures of light, using lenses and refraction to transcend the physical materials at their core. As an artist, she explores the beauty of change through the act of not-forcing; searching for resonance between all the moving elements. Her process is intuitive; like a dance between the mathematical world of physics and the intimate, subjective experience of being alive within it.

As a creative engineer with a background in Architectural Engineering, Maria has developed and produced light and kinetic installations internationally. Her contributions to studios such as DRIFT, Field, and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, on projects for clients including Therme Art, Edition Hotel, BMW, and The Guggenheim have shaped her career and deepened her understanding of how light, movement, and human perception interact at scale.

With her work, both sculptural and site-specific, she aims to add a new dimension to architectural space. She has moved away from a technology-driven approach, turning instead towards a more receptive integration of nature’s inherent complexity; using fundamental physical forces such as gravity, airflow and light refraction as her core materials.
